Description

Topic: Religious. Santa Magdalena.

Elements: Panel consisting of fifteen painted tiles. Human figure of a woman representing Saint Magdalene with architectural and landscape elements. The image of Mary Magdalene appears to us represented according to traditional iconography; the scene is located in two distinct spaces, separated by a stone wall. In the foreground the image of Magdalene depicted in elegant clothes and with long hair, with the attributes of the skull and the jar of ointments referring to the moment when she washed the feet of Jesus Christ. The Castle tower and the Church bell tower appear in the background. These two elements are the result of the innovation introduced by the ceramist.

Style: Between figurative and realistic.

Symbolism: Representation of Santa Magdalena located in the Font with the silhouette of the village of Verdú in the background.

Context

Ordered: Friends of the Font de Santa Magdalena.

Historical context: On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the recovery of the surroundings of the Font de Santa Magdalena, in 2013 a stone monolith was inaugurated in tribute to the Source. This place is the area where the town of Verdú once had its origins, and the Association of Friends of the Font de Santa Magdalena recovered and organized a gathering there every year, for May 1.

Verdú is located in the Urgell region, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia.

To get there, you can take the A-2 motorway to Tàrrega and then follow the C-14 road to Verdú. You can also reach Tàrrega by train. From Tàrrega to Verdú travel must be done by taxi or on foot.
