Historical context: In 1916 the Trust of Sant Pere Claver bought the most emblematic part of the Castle; Tower, Cellar, Sala Molí, Sala Abat Copons, Court of Arms,… and became the seat of the Board of Trustees. Cèsar Martinell was the modernist architect of the Commonwealth of Catalonia who adapted the cellar space as an oil mill. The architect developed his work in the last months of 1919 to adapt the village cellar to an oil mill. His intervention at the Castle was of a technical nature, the only artistic element was the painted tile mural that was placed in the courtyard. The tiles were painted by Xavier Nogués, renowned noucentista artist. This tile mural is the only known religious piece by Xavier Nogués. In Verdú, the collaboration between Cèsar Martinell and Xavier Nogués is repeated.
