Sant Pere Claver

Elements: The mural in horizontal format was executed in homage to Sant Pere Claver, a saint born in Verdú. This mural is located on one of the access walls to the Plaça Major, where there had been a restaurant years ago. The owner decided to name the establishment after Sant Pere Claver, and even today you can see the half-erased letters in the center of the image. Regarding the elements that appear in the mural, the ceramist chooses two of the most emblematic buildings of the town to frame the figure of the saint. On the left, you can see the facade of the Church of Santa Maria, and on the right the facade of the Castle. In the middle of the square and prominently we find the figure of the Saint, accompanied by the slave. The last owner of the restaurant decided to change its name and that’s when the original graffiti on the mural was covered up behind a layer of paint.

Historical context: Pere Claver Jesuit and missionary entered the Society of Jesus at the age of sixteen where he studied theology in Barcelona, ​​studied in Girona and Mallorca. He went as a missionary to Cartagena de Indias, where he took care of the sick, the imprisoned, and especially the black slaves from Africa. In Verdú, the house where he was born has been converted into a Refuge for Pilgrims, and welcomes pilgrims on the Ignatian Way. You can also visit the Sant Pere Claver sanctuary, dedicated to his devotion since 1887 (C. Sant Pere Claver, XXX), on the occasion of his canonization.
