Ruta dels Murals Ceràmics de Verdú

Carnisseria

Location: C. Tendes, 2. Outer

Year of creation: Late 80s of the 20th century

Technique: Painted tile

Author: Ramon Boleda Cases

Description

Topic: Commercial

Elements: The mural is composed of forty-five tiles. which bore witness to the commercial axis that this street had been for years. Today, there are no shops open on the shopping street. The butcher shop opened to the public in 1924, and several generations have passed there.

Symbolism: More than symbolism in this mural there is a practical sense. If you look closely you will see that the door frame is larger than the entrance door to the establishment. It was considered that to bridge the difference in width, a sign announcing the establishment would be a good option.

Context

Ordered: The tile mural was placed following some reforms that were carried out in the butcher shop, towards the end of the 20th century and was the initiative of the owner of the establishment.

Historical context: This mural is located on the shortest street in Verdú. In a space of twenty-five meters there were, in the middle of the 20th century, up to seven shops per lane. On this street that leads to Plaça Major is the Portal de Guimerà, today the only trace of the first walled town that Verdú had in the 12th century.
