Elements: In the mural you can recognize the owner in the white apron in the midst of making the mandongo, with the sausage making machine. At the back you can already see the manufactured products; drying sausages, black and white sausages, … the products that have always been made in the butcher’s shop and which today are the best sellers. Homemade products.
Style: The style of this mural is certainly realistic, it is a portrait of the shop owner.
Symbolism: The mural conveys the owner’s love for the butcher’s craft learned through the different family generations, the importance he attaches to ceramics, recognizing the ceramists of Verdú as artists, and finally, his love for the his town, by wanting to be placed at the entrance of the establishment, welcoming everyone who approaches.
Context
Ordered: It was the owner of the store, Joan Vallverdú, who carried out renovation works on the establishment. The workshop part was expanded and the exhibition and sales part was improved. but in addition to the improvements to the interior, this mural was also commissioned, as an artistic part.
Historical context: Placeta de la Verdura – market.
Curiosities: Joan Vallverdú secretly commissioned this mural from the artist from Verdun, Enric Orobitg. Once the mural was finished, he presented it to the family to be placed on the front of the store. Joan wanted the mural to become a clear claim for the buyer, bearing witness to the craftsmanship that they work at home.
